First Workshop, Composition

A group of eager photographers gathered on Selsey Beach for a unique workshop focused on composition and mindfulness in photography. Participants were encouraged to slow down and truly engage with their surroundings.

Unlike traditional photography sessions that often emphasize quantity, this workshop introduced a creative challenge: each participant was limited to just 15 images. This restriction encouraged a more thoughtful approach, requiring photographers to carefully consider elements like framing, leading lines, balance, and light before pressing the shutter. By embracing this constraint, they developed a deeper awareness of composition and refined their ability to create impactful images.

Beyond technical skills, the workshop also promoted mindfulness. Photography is often a meditative practice, and by taking the time to observe their environment fully, participants found themselves more present in the moment. The act of composing each shot with intention allowed them to connect deeply with the textures of the beach, the changing sky, and the dynamic movement of the tide. Rather than rushing to capture as many images as possible, they embraced patience and deliberation, fostering a more immersive and reflective experience.

As the session came to an end, the photographers shared their experiences and insights, reflecting on how this mindful approach had transformed their creative process. By limiting themselves, they had, paradoxically, expanded their vision. The Selsey Beach workshop not only enhanced their compositional skills but also deepened their appreciation for the art of seeing—reminding them that photography is not just about capturing an image but about truly experiencing the world through the lens.
